Positioning Residents & Fellows for Success in the Business of Medicine

How to evaluate the opportunities that will present
themselves and make your first career decision.
Pursuing your dream to become a physician may have been one of the most difficult things you have done. The levels of study, dedication and sacrifice necessary are surely unparalleled in the pursuit of almost any career. But there can be few careers that equal the rewards and dedication to taking care of others.

With school soon to be behind you it’s time to carefully plan your transition to practice.

You probably have multiple job offers. But there’s a lot more to planning your future more than just reviewing a contract or simple job offer. In  fact, given the ever changing face of healthcare, why wouldn’t you apply the same detailed, analytical approach to your first job offers as your education has trained you to take toward your patients?

I will help you analyze these opportunities, so you’ll be confident with your decision.

My twenty years representing physicians and working within medical practices can provide you with a “deep dive” into each opportunity that has been presented to you. We will go beyond the normal “nine steps to a good employment agreement” and make sure no specifics about your pending relationship are overlooked, no question left unanswered.
The goal: Job longevity and job satisfaction.

“Tom helped me navigate a significant career change as I moved from an employed position to the establishment of a private practice. He sourced the legal expertise necessary to extricate me, personally did the financial modeling of the practice for the first year—which came within a few dollars of his estimates—and aided in finding and negotiating my office space and establishing my relationships with payers. He dealt with almost all aspects of my strategic planning and his knowledge of the “business of medicine” was invaluable to me.”

Here are just a few of the eleven categories I will explore for you and your new practice:
Practice Budgeting and Planning—Credentialing.  1, 3 and 5 year budgets.  Benchmarking.  Budget to actual comparisons.
HIPPA and other complicance issues.
The Business of Your New Practice—Overhead allocations.  Evaluations.  RVUs vs. FFS.  Catchment areas.  Patient allocations.  Marketing.
Employment Agreements—Non-competes.  Performance quotas. Reporting  requirements.  Start up loans.  Contract renewals.  Selecting legal counsel.
Practice governance—Where does your practice fit?  The open door policy.  Partnership tracks.
Billing—In house vs. out.  The importance of coding.  Analyzing reports.  Negotiating payer rates.  Monitoring CMS and payer changes.
Practice HR and it’s importance.
The Clinical Relationship—Mentoring.  Reports and how to analyze them.  Quality measures.  Virtual care.  Quotas.

All come complete with charts, budget format and a list of important questions.

The first step you take in transitioning to your medical practice is one of the biggest one you may ever make.
I will guide you to make sure there are no questions left unanswered, all details are covered and documented, and that you know exactly where your first step is leading you in your career.

“I recently changed private medical practices and Tom’s expertise was invaluable throughout the entire process. He was able to assist with insurance issues, contract advice and logistics of the transition and was there through the start up with my new practice. It was very beneficial to have his help throughout such an important time in my career.”  -L.D., MD
